From Chur, Switzerland, we travelled over the Alps on the Bernina Express, on the UNESCO site Rhaetian Railway, opened in 1908. We had reserved seats in the panoramic car with floor to ceiling windows (reservations sold out months ago). The tracks cross 196 bridges and 55 tunnels over four hours, and climbs over the Bernina Pass at almost 7,400 feet. The train descends into Tirano, Italy, where we caught a Trenord train into Milan.
